We use these streets in early lessons to work on fundamentals: smooth steering, mirror checks, speed control around parked cars, and getting used to the feel of the dual-control automatic. Once those basics are comfortable, we step up to the busier environment of the local shopping strips.
Shopping-strip driving is a skill in itself. You need to manage pedestrians stepping off kerbs, watch for car doors opening, slow down without holding up traffic behind you, and scan constantly for cyclists. Our instructor introduces these scenarios at a pace that suits you, explaining what to look for and how to respond calmly. We also cover tram rules in detail during Essendon lessons, since tram routes run through the area and the VicRoads driving test can include tram-related scenarios. Knowing when to stop behind a tram, how to handle tram stops, and when you can and cannot overtake a tram are all skills we practise on the road, not just in theory.
Essendon is also close to major arterial roads that connect to the Tullamarine Freeway and surrounding suburbs. When you are ready, we use these roads to build your confidence with higher-speed driving, lane changes, merging and navigating busier traffic flows. The proximity to the airport precinct means you will encounter a range of road users, from local commuters to heavy vehicles, all of which prepare you well for driving independently after your test.
Essendon learners typically sit their driving test at the Broadmeadows VicRoads centre. It is a straightforward drive north from Essendon, and we spend time in lessons driving the types of roads and conditions you will encounter around the test centre. We focus on the skills that matter most during the test: smooth observation at intersections, safe lane changes, proper use of mirrors, and confident but careful driving in a range of traffic conditions. We introduce shopping-strip driving gradually. Early lessons focus on quieter back streets so you build basic car control first. Once you are comfortable with mirrors, speed management and lane positioning, we move onto busier strips where you will practise slowing for pedestrians, watching for car doors opening and managing parked-car hazards. Our instructor stays calm beside you and talks through each situation as it comes up.
The key rules are: you must stop behind a tram that has its doors open so passengers can board and alight safely, you cannot overtake a tram on the left, and you must give way to passengers crossing to a tram stop. In Essendon you will encounter tram routes during lessons, and we spend time practising these scenarios so they feel routine before your test. Your instructor will explain each rule in real time as you drive.
It depends on your experience level. The 45-minute Starter lesson works well for absolute beginners who want to ease into driving without feeling overwhelmed. The 60-minute Standard lesson is our most popular option and gives enough time to warm up, practise a skill and consolidate it. The 90-minute Extended lesson suits learners closer to their test who want longer, uninterrupted practice sessions that mirror real driving conditions.
